Picture

Billy - (Ozark Star)

Billy raced in Jacksonville, Florida at Orange Park where he was the winner of the 2003 and 2004 Mayor's Cups.  He retired in 2005 and was transferred to Carolina Veterinary Associates in Charlotte where he was a blood donor for 2 years helping many dogs who needed blood during surgery.  In November of 2007, he was given to his forever home where he lives with his sister Nikki.  In addition to the HOEF, Billy volunteers at local pet stores here he meets and greets the public and educates on Greyhound adoption.  Billy is a very sweet and social boy who will stand for hours with legs shaking, just to get a pat on the head.  He is loved very much by his human parents.
Picture

Clown - (Regall Azkaban)

Clown is a newcomer to HOEF, with the 2011 CRF season being his first. He raced in Rhode Island, and is now living with his new mom in South Carolina. Clown loves children, new things, treats, walks, naps… basically anything and everything. He lives up to his name, Clown, as he can be very silly on occasion. Most of the time you will find him napping in the HOEF DogHouse, but watch for him to be dancing around outside, sniffing and being generally ridiculous.

Picture

Daisy Mei-Mei - (FTH Oopsy Daisy CGC)

Daisy is a veteran with HOEF, having started in 2007 with the group at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. After two years on sabbatical in the United Kingdom, she has returned a Yorkshire lass and is ready to get back to performing with HOEF. Daisy raced in Florida and was adopted in March of 2007. She likes toys, walks, and snuggling with other greyhounds. Her nickname, Mei-Mei, means beloved little girl, and Daisy definitely is that. She recently became a sensation in the dog book world with the publication of “Proud Racer: An American Greyhound in Yorkshire,” the tale of her two years living in Yorkshire, England. For more info on the book, go to Daisy's mom's Lulu page.

Picture

Delilah -
(BIF Masquerade's Mischief Managed SC)

Delilah was adopted at the tender age of 8-weeks-old. She began her career as a Hounds of East Fairhaven member in 2010. She loves festival and all of the attention and excitement it brings. A very affectionate dog, she is likely to bathe a child's face in kisses. Delilah takes everything in stride and loves new experiences. She is an active, engaging dog. She lives for lure coursing and is a Best in Field and multiple Best of Breed winning hound. She finished 2012 in the top 20 Greyhounds coursing in AKC. She is a joy to watch run! You can follow her progress on the Masquerade Hounds website
Picture

Jewel - (Jewel of Mine)

Jewel was born on July 8th, 2006.  She was adopted by Brandon and Cameron Freeman in April 2009 and adjusted quite well to life in a home, quickly becoming a veritable Daddy's girl.  She loves all kinds of food, squeaky toys, and hogging the bed.  Affectionately nicknamed "Piggy," "Daddy's bald-butt princess," and "Pooka," Jewel has no shortage of love at home.  Jewel has been with the Hounds of East Fairhaven since the 2009 season.
Picture

Knight - (Night Plans)

Knight was born on May 23rd, 2003.  Adopted in November 2008 by Cameron and Brandon Freeman, Knight was destined to be a member of the Hounds of East Fairhaven.  Some of Knight's favorite things are walks, car-rides, and being scratched on his hips.  He is a very strong leaner and enjoys finding many new legs to lean on at the Renaissance Festival.  He answers to the nickname of "Sweet Boy" and is quite happy lounging about the house on his blanket and accepting affection from anyone willing to give it.  Knight joined the Hounds of East Fairhaven in 2009.

Picture

Lorelei - (Masquerade's If the Tiara Fits)

Lorelei was born on September 7, 2007. She has been a member of the Hounds of East Fairhaven since the 2009 season. She was adopted at 15-months-old by Shannon and was neither registered nor trained to race. Her family thinks it is because she is so playful when she runs and is so easily distracted. She is an extremely loving, affectionate girl to everybody. She never meets a stranger! Very likely to kiss everybody she meets, she is often loved and remembered by patrons.

Lucius - (Closin Time)

Lucius joined the Hounds of East Fairhaven in the 2008 season. He was born on January 20, 2004. After a successful racing career he was retired and adopted by Shannon. He is a friendly boy who revels in all of the attentions he receives by "his adoring fans". His extremely unusual color (blue fawn brindle) and amber colored eyes attracts a lot of attention. He particularly enjoys watching the Jewels of the Caravan and visiting with the lovely dancers. Lucius doesn't make as many appearances as he used to since he has gotten older.
Picture

Miles - (Miles Per Hour CGC JC)

Miles is a little different than most of the retired racing greyhounds that are members of our cast because he never raced at a greyhound track. He was rescued as a 1 day old pup from a family that had an unwanted litter of greyhound pups that were freezing in 20 degree temperatures. Miles is one of the lucky pups that survived. He was born in January of 2010 and was performing at the Georgia Renaissance Festival by the time he was 12 weeks old. Even though he is one of our youngest cast members he has been doing Festivals most of his life. Greyhounds remain puppy like until they are nearly 3 years old so you are likely to see Miles playing and bouncing more than the other lazy adult greyhounds. Miles earned his Canine Good Citizen title when he was 8 months old and recently earned a Junior Courser title. He enjoys doing obedience, agility,  lure coursing and swimming when he is not at the Festival. Miles has had his own blog since he was a baby where you can find lots of puppy photos.   http://greyhoundpuppy.blogspot.com/

Nikki - (Kay's Nicole)

Nikki raced in Ft. Lauderdale and Melbourne, Flordia.  She retired in March, 2007 and was adopted by her human parents in April 2007.  Nikki lives at her forever home with her brother Billy.  Nikki is a very sweet and friendly girl who loves to run 5 very fast laps every morning around her fenced yard chasing squirrels and loves playing with her squeaky toys.  She loves public appearances where she can educate people on Greyhound adoption.  She is loved very much by her human parents.
Picture

Ranger

Ranger is 3-years-old. He loves his walks, treats, and his buddy  Oscar (a chihuahua). He was adopted by Donna's daughter Becca after visiting the Hounds of East Fairhaven for years. Donna brings him to festival and he is a natural!
Picture

Timmy - (Demon Dancer)

Timmy is retired from festival now but he attended during the 2008-2009 seasons. He only raced 10 times before retiring due to a leg injury and was adopted just after turning 2-years-old. Timmy is a very shy boy with strangers but a playful, snuggly lap dog with Shannon. His favorite part of festival was always cuddling on a dog bed and being pet by small children.
Picture

Vanna - (Reward Vanished)

Vanna's person wrote some wonderful things about her! She was born 11.21.2001. "Vanna came out of the Orlando track, where she unfortunately did not race well, so she retired a little early. She was brought to Greyhound Crossroads to find her forever home, when one day I was looking for a rescue dog and came across GC's website. I fell in love instantly and brought Vanna to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. Vanna has over 40+ acres to run and play. There are many chickens, cows, and other farm animals around for her to sniff and see. Vanna also lives with two small dogs, several cats, and even two teenage girls (ha ha ha). She is a very placid dog and loves to go for car rides and be the princess that she is, but she does have a playful side that is just down right entertaining. Vanna is truly a greyt dog.!!!"

Ibizan Hounds

Picture

Finnegan - (L-Wynds There and Back Again)

Finnegan will begin his royal career at the Carolina Renaissance Festival in the Fall 2012 season. His big debut was at the Enchanted Chalice Faire in Greenville. Born May 20, 2012, he is HOEF's youngest canine member. He also has career aspirations of being a show and lure coursing dog. He has earned two Hound group 1's from puppy matches before he turned 6-months-old! He is a pointed show dog.
Picture

Nova  - (L-Wynds Gone Supernova JC TCP)

Nova is the first Ibizan Hound to join Shannon's family and has proven himself to be a fantastic, much-loved member. He is a very happy, energetic boy. Typical of Ibizan Hounds, Nova is very athletic and playful. His current career includes AKC conformation (he is major pointed), lure coursing, and straight racing. Nova loves to chase the bunny! He finished 2012 as the #14 hound running in ASFA singles. You can follow his career at www.masqueradehounds.com.

Former Members of the Hounds of East Fairhaven

Gone, but not forgotten

Picture

Hunky - (Fond A Hunk)

Hunky was one of the original "Hounds of Ulster" that joined the cast at the Carolina Renaissance Festival in 2001.  Doing festival was one of the highlights of his life, and his favourite thing ever was the joust.  Hunky had a fascination with the horses and once pulled his fewterer's skirt TO HER KNEES because he was jumping up and down on it in excitement from seeing the horses on the jousting field.  Hunky didn't do many tricks and wasn't as flashy as some of the other canine members of the cast, but he possessed a special, gentle, old soul that drew people to him in droves, especially children.  We will always remember him lying on a dog bed surrounded by children, unfurling his huge ears, smiling his houndy smile and gently thumping his tail.
Picture

JD- Just Dog -
(M's Wrong Dog RE, FCh,JC, CGC, TDInc, GCADX)

JD was Joanne's first Renaissance Festival dog and one of the original Hounds of East Fairhaven. He was famous for the many tricks he could perform including reading flash cards. He could also speak and whisper and do many other tricks. JD was one of the top lure coursers in the country two years in a row and was a Therapy Dog with Therapy Dogs Inc. He earned his Rally Obedience Excellent Title and his Canine Good Citizen. JD was a dog that had been in several homes and was returned due to his size, energy, separation anxiety and other behavior problems before Joanne got him. He is the reason that Joanne became involved in dog training, fostering and working with greyhounds. JD is a great example of how far a dog can come with training. JD crossed the bridge in 2009 after a long battle with cancer.
Picture

Jeany - (Bud's Lady Jean)

Jeany was a cast member by necessity because the rest of her canine housemates were members.  She grew to love the festival, but after the incident with her nose in the Lord Mayor's lemonade in the first season (2001) she would probably rather be on a sofa than out at festival.  She was another hound that drew the crowds in, though, with her coy demeanor and bunny soft yellow fur.  A true Renaissance Princess, Jeany knew how to work the crowds with just a tilt of her tiny head and a look from her deep brown eyes.  Jeany was Hunky's soulmate, and the two of them crossed to the Rainbow Bridge within months of each other.
Picture

Lizzard - (Shotgun Liz)

Liz only attended the festival a few times due to her age and blindness/mobility problems, but she loved every minute of it.  She would tilt her beautiful old head up, nose in the air, and AWOOF when she required attention.  One of her shining moments was her escape from the tent when we all thought she wouldn't go anywhere...she was halfway to the food area before her owner caught her, shuffling along on painful feet, nose pointed toward the turkey legs.  Lizzard was the momma dog to all the hounds with whom she shared her home...as well as to her owner, who misses her even today.
Picture

Moose - (Kickin Kevin)

Moose is one of our newest greyhound members, although his owner Joanne has been a member of the Hounds of East Fairhaven since the early days. Moose was a successful racer and just retired from racing in 2011 and is the newest addition to Joanne's family. He is 5 years old and very large for a greyhound weighing close to 100lbs. Moose is a gentle giant and a friendly, happy guy in most situations. He was a little nervous his first couple of days at the festival and wasn't sure he liked it though. We appreciate all the kids that helped us change his mind by giving him treats. By the end of the second day he was looking for treats any time a child walked in the building instead of trying to hide in the corner.

Pinky - (Logo's Pearly Gates CGC, RN, TDInc)

Although many festival attendees think that Pinky is a "baby greyhound" he is actually full grown and is an Italian Greyhound. White Italian Greyhounds like Pinky were favorite subjects of the Italian Renaissance painters.

(Click here to read more about Italian Greyhounds.)

Pinky got his name because you can see his pink skin through his white fur and because he resembled Pinky - the mouse on the cartoon Pinky And The Brain. Like many white dogs, Pinky is deaf. He is trained to respond to hand signals and knows all obedience commands and many tricks. Since he responds so well to signals, the only time his deafness is really noticeable is if he is not looking or is asleep. Sometimes he gets temporarily "lost" when he falls asleep in an unusual spot and doesn't hear his family calling the dogs. Occasionally Pinky has been known to not look at his owner to avoid seeing a hand signal when he wants to continue doing something he shouldn't.

Pinky's owner, Joanne, got him at 8 months old in 2003 and he has been a regular since at the both Festivals. Pinky is also a Therapy Dog with Therapy Dogs Inc and has his Canine Good Citizen title and his Rally Obedience Novice title.

Pinky with the Queen at the joust at the Georgia Festival. Pinky may be the only one that ever survived sitting in the King's place on the throne next to the Queen.

Picture

Profile - (Mo Tivator)

Profee was another of the original cast members.  He LIVED for festival time, as he did for any time that he had attention on him.  Profee never quite surpassed JD's repertoire of tricks, but he did know his commands in two languages and could grin like a maniac on demand.  He excelled at the lure pole demonstrations and even took occasion to dart away to catch a Tortuga show or charm the Morris Dancers.  Profee was a definite presence at the festival, and he attended every season from 2001 until his death from a tumor in 2007.  A festival favourite, there are still older patrons who remember the "silly grinning black and white hound."
Picture

Streak -
(My Easy Street  RE, JC, CGC, TDInc)

Streak was a regular at the Carolina and Georgia Renaissance Festivals from a week after he retired from racing in April of 2005 until Nov of 2010 when he passed away due to cancer.  Streak raced at 92lbs and everyone that saw him commented on his size. He was a gentle giant though and couldn't have been a sweeter dog.  Besides performing at Renaissance Festivals, Streak was a Therapy Dog with Therapy Dogs Inc and a Canine Good Citizen. He also had his Rally Obedience Excellent title and loved to lure course. He was the number 6 greyhound in the country in LGRA racing in 2005 so was quite an athlete too. Streak loved everyone he met especially children. If a child stepped on a paw, tail, ears or fell on him, he didn't mind. His owner, Joanne, says he was the most bomb proof greyhound she has ever seen. He could be counted on in any situation and the only thing that bothered him were bees. Streak was a real angel and is missed by many.

Trevor

Trevor was a much-loved member of the Hounds of East Fairhaven. He was a beautiful Borzoi and attracted a lot of attention. He sadly passed away in early 2012. He will be missed by many.
